New scientific publication on the “Black Road” in Treblinka

A new research article entitled “PREDOMINANTLY NON-INVASIVE INVENTORY AND PRESERVATION-ORIENTED DOCUMENTATION OF THE ‘BLACK ROAD’ IN TREBLINKA” has been published in npj Heritage Science (Springer Nature).

The article presents the results of interdisciplinary research and
documentation of the remains of the so-called Black Road in Treblinka, which connected areas associated with the operation of the German Nazi camps Treblinka I and Treblinka II.

The study was based primarily on non-invasive and minimally invasive methods, including photogrammetric documentation, surveying and GIS, archival research, archaeological investigation and material analyses.

An important part of the project involved the detailed documentation of fragments of Jewish tombstones – matzevot – that had been used by
the Germans as construction material for the road. The research was intended not only to identify and document the surviving remains, but also to provide a basis for the future conservation.
