On the afternoon of Monday, August 2, 1943, an armed revolt by Jewish prisoners broke out at the German Nazi Treblinka II Extermination Camp.
Since the spring of 1943, the corpses of the murdered had been burned systematically. Transports of deported Jewish people arrived much less frequently. The prisoners feared that the liquidation of the camp was inevitable and would occur soon. They understood that the only way to escape was through the armed revolt. On that day, there were about 840 prisoners in the camp. Not all took part in the revolt. It is estimated that only around 200 people managed to escape the camp and the subsequent chase. Over 100 individuals survived until the end of the war.
Treblinka was almost entirely burned down. After the revolt, the Germans began the liquidation of the camp. They dismantled all buildings and installations, plowed the area, and sowed it with lupines so that no trace of one of the greatest crimes in history would remain.
On August 2, 2024, at the Treblinka II Extermination Camp site, the 81st anniversary of the revolt will be commemorated. We invite you to join us in the ceremony.
