{"id":12523,"date":"2018-11-20T08:51:13","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T07:51:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/muzeumtreblinka.eu\/informacje\/zaloga-1\/"},"modified":"2019-07-01T13:21:32","modified_gmt":"2019-07-01T11:21:32","slug":"staff-1","status":"publish","type":"portfolio","link":"https:\/\/muzeumtreblinka.eu\/en\/informacje\/staff-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Staff"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1530965056405{padding-top: 60px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1530965062953{padding-bottom: 40px !important;}&#8221;][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Treblinka I &#8211; Staff&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left&#8221; use_theme_fonts=&#8221;yes&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\">The camp crew consisted of several SS-officers and about 100 guards. <b><i>SS-Hauptsturmf\u00fchrer Theodor (Theo) van Eupen was the camp commandant<\/i><\/b> throughout the entire period of the camp\u2019s functioning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>The deputy commandant was Sturmf\u00fchrer Karol Gustaw Preif (Fritz Pr\u00f6fi)<\/i><\/b>, called \u201cOld\u201d, \u201cGrandfather\u201d, \u201cPigeon Fancier\u201d by the prisoners \u2013 he was in the habit of whistling. In addition to his duties as deputy commandant, Fritz also took care of the utility compound of the camp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>The camp commandant\u2019s personal assistant was SS-Untersturmf\u00fchrer Lundecke<\/i><\/b>. He was one of those who organised \u201cgames\u201d for SS-officers. These games took place mostly from Saturday to Sunday and always ended tragically for the prisoners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>The commanding officer was SS-Untersturmf\u00fchrer Herbert Stumpe<\/i><\/b> with the very meaningful nickname \u201cLaughing Death\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>The SS-Untersturmf\u00fchrer Franz Schwarz<\/i><\/b>, known as \u201cExecutioner\u201d, <b><i>also stood out for his cruelty<\/i><\/b><i>.<\/i> He was the head of a group of prisoners working at the railway station in Ma\u0142kinia, along the Bug river and at digging peat near Majdan Kupienty\u0144ski. He selected prisoners and often carried out death sentences himself, killing them with a pickaxe or a wooden hammer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>SS-Unterscharf\u00fchrer Franz Leopold Lanz was the head of the craft workshops<\/i><\/b>. He also trained the watchmen. SS-Unterscharf\u00fchrer Hagen was responsible for the economic affairs of the camp. He was particularly cruel to women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>SS-officer Dingelmann was responsible for the condition of prisoners<\/i><\/b>; it was him who conducted daily roll calls. <b><i>SS-Rottenf\u00fchrer Wilhelm Weishar<\/i><\/b> <b><i>was the head of the farm<\/i><\/b> that occupied the grounds of the Socha and Milewek estates.<b><i> SS-Unterscharf\u00fchrer Willi Velten and SS-Rottenf\u00fchrer Mehbiss (or Moebis) were drivers<\/i><\/b>. Hans Heibusch was responsible for the Jewish compound of the camp. He carried out daily selection, assigned prisoners to appropriate groups, and housed them in appropriate barracks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\">The guards in the camp were mostly Ukrainians, but also Lithuanians and Latvians. All of them voluntarily performed their duties and underwent training in the so-called <i>Ausbildungslager Trawniki<\/i> near Lublin, because the service in the camps was of a special nature and required \u201cappropriate\u201d preparation. The Germans were armed with handguns on the camp grounds, performing their service \u2013 additionally \u2013 with machine guns.
